Big Hairy Audacious Goals
by on July 5, 2010 inSmall achievements may be hurting your success
I first heard the phrase while on a job interview. The owner of the company had very non-discreetly parked his fancy Audi R8 by the entrance to the building, and his license plate read, "BHAGS." When inside, the interviewer asked me if I knew what it stood for, and proceeded to explain the meaning: Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Some time later, I was reading Fast Company magazine which mentioned BHAG and referenced it to the original source in Jim Collins' book, "Built to Last." So, I finally knew where it was from, and added it to my reading list. (And you should read it, too!)…
Are You an Artist or a Designer?
by on January 5, 2010 inYea, I have the title of "Art Director." Yes, I'm in the Art Department. My wife introduces me to folks as an artist and my mom has been calling me an artist since I could pick up a pencil. But I'm not an artist. I hate being called artist and cringe every time someone exclaims, "Oh! You're an Artist!" when they see something I've drawn. But I'm definitely not an artist. I am a Designer, and proud of it!…
5 Design Goals for the New Year
by on December 23, 2009 inWow! Can't believe that was only a year ago! Is it just me, or has 2009 been a really long, slow year? So much has happened in 1 year, for myself (new kid) and globally. Talk about action-packed!
It's always great to have goals for the new year, but if I write them down, I'm always more motivated to accomplish them. My design goals are meant to push me and not get complacent during the coming year. Looking back at last year's list, I accomplished more than 3 out of the 5 goals, which is not bad, I think, considering how hectic work and personal life has been.
Here's a recap of last year, and my accomplishments:…
Headliner Making Headlines
by on September 22, 2009 inWow!! Looks like HeadlinerCreative is making headlines! My website was just featured on the front page of Drupal.org! Thanks to the Drupal community members for sticking up for the little guy! I hope my website demonstrates to all nay-sayers and timid designers that Drupal really can be a perfect choice for small and simple websites. Check out the article here. …
Happy Rosh Hashana!
by on September 17, 2009 inThe Jewish New Year is upon us! (I don't get to use the word "upon" nearly as much as I'd like to!) Rosh Hashana begins at sundown tomorrow (Friday). It's a time when we reflect on the our actions from this past year and make committments to do better in the coming year. I wish everyone a sweet new year, filled with happiness, blessing, health and prosperity! May all of your heart's desires come true!

Send Your Data By... Pigeon.
by on September 14, 2009 inBy now, I'm sure you've heard of the race between Winston the messenger pigeon and Telkom, to see who will deliver 4G of data quicker. I'm only re-writing about because I just learned about it and want to make sure everybody else who hasn't (that one other dude in the remote jungles of Brazil) can read about it here.
A certain IT worker at a certain company was miffed about the speed - or lack of it - of his company's internet connection. While talking it over with some other coworkers and some beers, they decided a race was in order, to see if a carrier pigeon would beat the telecom in sending 4G of data to another building at the same company.
Here's a quote about how the race went down on Wednesday:…
I Might've Liked Science
by on September 10, 2009 inI was reading a book the other day about symmetry and tesselations (interlocking shapes) for pattern-making ("Designing Tesselations: The secrets of interlocking patterns"). The author wrote that the classifications scientists use to describe the symmetry of crystal formations is the same classification used in the industry for pattern-making (textiles, wall coverings, etc.) She echoed a long held feeling of mine of resentment for her teachers back in high school who failed to engage and relate to her, and so she had to relearn all that information on her own.…
Welcome to the New Me
by on September 6, 2009 inWell, it's finally here! The new website has arrived and it looks glorious! I've just pulled off all the wrapping paper and have given it a test drive, and I'm happy to say that I'm quite pleased with how it turned out! As every designer knows, designing for yourself is quite a chore, and I had been dreading it and pushing it off for a long, long time. And now that it's completed, I feel good!
I had mulled around a number of ideas about my new website for a long time. I labored over the message I wanted to give over. I experimented with different styles. And mostly, I fought with myself about the architecture I would use (I used Drupal). I sketched and tossed dozens of ideas.…
5 Goals for the New Year
by on December 22, 2008 inAs a frequenter of Elliot Jay Stocks' blog, I thought I'd post my own list of goals for the new year. His post can be read here.
The new year is fast approaching, so here are my goals for 2009:…
- Create a site built on Drupal 6. I've been meaning to jump into Drupal 6 ever since it was released, but module support was pretty low for a while. Now that all the big modules, like Views and CCK, Calendar, etc are all updated, I think it's time! Currently in the middle of a Drupal site, now, actually, I hope to release it early 2009!
